Our mission to connect is expressed through the Sustainability and Society Series (SaSS). The various formats feature the brightest innovators in sustainability today discussing the integration of society, sustainability, and identity.
Five Year Anniversary
What: Five Year Anniversary (Fundraiser, Auction, Celebration)
When: October 13th, 2013 from 4-7pm
Where: HUB Seattle
220 Second Avenue South Seattle, WA 98104
OUT for Sustainability invites you to celebrate our five-year anniversary with special guests, our local auction, seasonal hors d’oeuvres, and local drinks. It’s been a remarkable evolution from a few friends forming a group of likeminded green gays to the now internationally recognized nonprofit we are today. Here are a few highlights of the past five years:
Earth Gay: Our best known event, a service project program celebrating the spirit of Earth Day the gay way has grown from 10 volunteers in 2009 to over 300 annual participants! Our flagship Earth Gay event in Seattle is one of the largest volunteer events in the city, and after a successful projects in Tacoma and Ocean Shores, we’re ambitious to see Earth Gay go truly national!
Greener Pride: We have a huge opportunity for impact with Pride festivities around the world, and we’re proud of what we’ve influenced so far in our home city. PrideFest now uses compostable cups in the beer garden and the Pride Parade no longer allows plastic bottle give-aways. Much more to be done, but diverting literally tons of plastic from the waste stream at Seattle’s second largest annual event feels good.
Sustainability and Society Series: Connecting ideas and people goes back to the beginning of the organization, from our social on sustainable sex toys through topics like queer food, responsible travel, and the evolution of the gayborhood. We’re ambitious to deepen and broaden the formats to give a the diverse voices of LGBTQ sustainability a chance to be heard while building a solid community.
Coming Out Local: This is where dozens of local farmers, local businesses, local organizations, and local enthusiasts gather to celebrate the diversity nurtured by a thriving local economy. We’re taking a year off from the big dinners we’ve been honored to host to rethink the format, but this core value of local action, local economy, local love isn’t going away.
Education, Advocacy, and so much more: Beyond these events (and others we’ve partnered, promoted, and hosted), OUT4S is out to change the world. The classic “act local, think global” adage rings true through the dozens of articles by and about us, the causes we’ve advocated for, and the ambition we have to use our unique position as the only LGBTQ nonprofit dedicated to sustainability to build momentum to the LGBTQ community to care more deeply about the environment, and to give greater visibility in the environmental movement to the uniquely strong and yet unseen impact the LGBTQ community makes every day toward a more responsible and just world for ALL.
Join us in reflecting on our impact so far, and dream with us as we share our renewed vision for a thriving human and natural world that is inclusive of all.

A Sustainability and Society Social is a chance to connect over shared values in a relaxed setting with special guests and facilitated conversations, world cafe style. We introduce our guests, then let them loose in smaller conversation groups, switching mid-way to get another perspective on the topic at hand. The goal is to get a few tastes of the larger issue we’re discussing, to contribute what you know and learn more from the others in the room. With drinks and snacks to keep it fun, as well as hosts to make introductions that spark great conversation, these are sure to be stimulating.
A Sustainability and Society Salon is an intimate private gathering of 5-10 individuals discussing a specific topic, whether it be the health impacts of air quality or the legal and social implications of rezoning. They are not controlled by OUT4S, but are rather organized by people or organizations in our network. The host works with OUT4S to pick the right people to be in the room, ideally a mix of perspectives and skills related to the topic. The host then facilitates a group discussion, supported by tools from OUT4S. The goal is to produce some shared understandings, and to note differences in opinion, then report that out in a few paragraphs with a photo or two, or a video by the group. They are fun, and documented in the LEARN section of OUT4S.org.
Sustainability and Society Symposiums are lectures and panel discussions open to the public, hosted by OUT4S and/or partner organizations, that delve into intersections of different core ideas. Examples could include resources and class, or how good sourcing differs across social divides and how to make sustainable consumption available to all. Audiences are engaged through extensive Q&A, and sometimes broken into small groups who report back to the larger assembly. Often funny and always informative, the hope is to take the ideas out and turn them into actions. Part of that is our hope to film each symposium, featuring them in LEARN so that others can be inspired for years to come.
Sustainability and Society Summits are meetings of the great minds of local, national, and topical leaders. Whether it is the LGBTQ community in Seattle or the national green building industry, these summits are designed to foster heightened commitment to a sustainable society among our society’s decision makers. While private events, the outcomes are meant to determine course for the future and are therefore well documented with specific achievable targets made public.
